Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is used in biotechnology to select for and screen for cells that have been transformed with Chloramphenicol resistant genes. It is also used to kill bacteria in cell culture media. Chloramphenicol is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It works by binding to the ribosomes of bacteria and preventing them from synthesizing proteins. This eventually leads to the death of the bacteria.
Chloramphenicol is a very effective antibiotic, but it is also a very dangerous drug. It can cause aplastic anemia, a serious and sometimes fatal condition that affects the bone marrow. Chloramphenicol should only be used when other antibiotics are not effective or when the risk of aplastic anemia is outweighed by the benefits of treatment.
